As some of you know I have been committed to buying and cooking with organic food from the beginning of this year. Along with being a committed reader of labels I have throw myself into the my new ethos, researching affordable, sustainable, seasonal and ethical organic meats, fruit, vegetables, spices, oils, dried fruits, nuts and flours.
I am committed to health and inner wellness. As a Chinese Medicine Practitioner, Herbalist and Acupuncturist, I have inside knowledge of ‘Super Foods’ particularly the GoJi Berry or GoQiZi as it has been used for around 1000 years in TCM (traditional Chinese Medicine). We use the GoJi Berry to nourish blood, heart, Liver and Kidney Yin which results in a calm mind, better iron levels, nourished, soothed and flexible muscles and tendons, smooth bowel movements and increased vitality. In the last couple of years Science has discovered that the GoJi Berry assists the body in all the afore mentioned inner body wellness, giving it the label ‘Super food’. Previously I had used the GoJi Berry in tea’s, herbal decoctions, soups and rice and just as a sweet treat straight into the mouth!
This year in line with my organic ethos I made sure to source organic GoJi Berries, I have tried them covered in Dark Chocolate, in Tea and as a sweet treat, all sourced from the health food store. As I have been buying from an online health food store I didn’t have the opportunity to read the label. Recently I was in the health food store I took the time to read the label…..From China, the label stated…..can it really be organic from China????? When food is imported from another country isn’t it RADIATED???
What is the difference between the GoJi Berries I get from my Chinese Medicine Herbal Supplier to the GoJi Berries on the shelf?
Is it only Price? Do I spend the extra 50% because the label says organic?
Does the benefit of the GoJi out weigh the fact that it isn’t organic?
When I questioned the manager in the store, she just said well you can only get GoJi Berries in China and Tibet and it’s a reputable company, we just don’t grow anything like that in Australia…..slightly Jaded answer if you ask me, there are plenty of local growers and producers in Australia, some people are doing an AMAZING job! In fact the GoJi Berries are grown all around the world and in Australia we do have suppliers and you can in fact buy your own GoJi plants in Bunning’s and most Local Nursery’s, as Australia is a great climate to grow them!
I still Completely support Organic’s but I believe that we need to keep asking questions and challenge the produce that is beginning to fill our ‘Health food’ stores.
